Human Rights
“The issue of human rights world-wide has to be kept centre stage at all times. If we are to continue to be seen internationally as a moral force where human rights are concerned, we must be above reproach. We should be pre-emptive in ensuring that there is no abuse in this regard in Ireland.
While Ireland has a very good human rights record, it is important that we do not become complacent. It is often the case that human rights abuses are perpetrated in an atmosphere of complacency. Many countries look to Ireland for example and reassurance.
By monitoring human rights issues world-wide and by responding vigorously to any abuses, we make it difficult for the perpetrators to exist in a civilised society.”
Senator Labhras Ó Murchú, speaking in the Seanad.
