Senator Labhras Ó Murchú had the distinction of being one of only two Irish people invited to attend the recent Europe Asia Forum in Singapore. The other person was Mr. T.P. Hardiman, Chancellor of Dublin City University and former Director General of RTE. 

Senator Ó Murchú has previously been invited to visit China, Japan, South Korea, and North Korea. 

The Forum in Singapore was organised by the Herbert Quandt Stifung Institute of Policy Studies and the Asia Europe Foundation. There were 48 participants from the 15 countries of the European Union and the 10 countries of East Asia. The participants from the worlds of politics, academia and the media were invited "to engage in a frank , collegial and rewarding dialogue". 

Among the participants at the Forum were Mr. Fidel V Ramos, Former President of the Philippines, Dr. Victor Fung, Chairman, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Dr. Il Sakong, CEO Institute of Global Economics, Prof S. Jayakumar, Minister for Law and Foreign Affairs, Republic of Singapore, Mr. Wolfgang Ischingar, State Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Bo Landin , Senior Vice President, Ericsson, Dr. Jurgen Oberg, Director Asia-Pacific, Siemens AG. 

After the Forum Senator Labhras Ó Murchú said he felt particularly proud at the standing of Ireland in International circles. "Our economic progress is the envy of many countries. We are particularly well poised, in an era where the horizons of technology continue to be expanded, to be one of the foremost leaders in this area. Knowledge is one of our strongest assets and will continue to underpin future progress".
