St Patrick's Day is celebrated not only throughout Ireland but throughout the world. Irish people everywhere and their friends proclaim the tenacity and achievements of the Irish nation on this special day each year.
In St Louis, several hundred thousand people attended the impressive Parade at which the Guest-of-Honour was Senator Labhrás Ó Murchú who attended at the invitation of Mr Joe McGlynn, Honorary Consul of Ireland, and the organising committee.
Prior to the Parade, twelve thousand participants took part in the sponsored run. It was a sight to behold to see the vast gathering, dressed in the colours of Ireland, mark St Patrick's Day in this special way.
It was an emotional experience when the Guest-of-Honour, together with the Archbishop, City dignitaries and the huge attendance stood to attention for Amhrán na bhFiann, the Irish National Anthem, played by the Band of the Marines.
In his address at the festivities Senator Ó Murchú said that the links which bind Ireland and America together in common cause had stood the test of time. Irish Americans in the land of their adoption had played a full and positive role in their new community. America in turn had been a close ally of Ireland in bringing about the Good Friday Agreement. Senator Ó Murchú congratulated the organisers of the Parade and the Irish Diaspora - the irish nation abroad - for their loyalty and commitment to the homeland.
